Instructor: Mrs. Smith

Dear Room 5 Families,

My name is Sarah Smith.  Last year was my second year at Sequoia.  I have been teaching in the district for the past twelve  years.  I have taught both second and first grade general education for eleven of those years and for the two others, I taught a moderate to severe SDC class.  I grew up in the area, and attended Acalanes High School and Saint Mary’s College, where I studied communication and then went on to complete my Multiple Subjects Credential.  I am grateful to be apart of the Sequoia Community and am looking forward to meeting all of my new students and families on the first day of school!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Smith

Week of January 17th
Dear Room Five Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful MLK weekend. As many of you know, the playground has been closed because of the flood we had last week. They are still cleaning and making sure that it is safe for the kids to play on. I feel very sorry for them that they have not had outdoor recess. I have been taking them in the afternoons to the kinder playground with hopes that they can get their energy out. With more rain in the forecast this week, I am concerned that things will not be getting better soon. For homework today, please have your child run around outside and get some exercise. :) I want them to have the chance to move around and get more fresh air. They can also practice for the upcoming Spell-A-Thon. All week homework will be to practice the Spell-A-Thon words. The official test will be next Wednesday January, 25th.
In honor of Martin Luther King, we have been discussing the importance of helping out in our community. We have been discussing the usual topics ( recycling, planting, volunteering, donating). For fun, I am assigning our class to do a random act of kindness. Please have your child write a card or draw a picture for someone they want to make smile. This can be a neighbor, a friend, or anyone you are comfortable with. Please continue to talk to them about the importance of doing something nice for people, even when you don't receive anything in return. Please complete this random act by the end of the month.
If you feel the need to do something extra, please do Raz kids. We will be taking the diagnostic portion of the IReady test these next few weeks, so at home access will be limited.
Thank you for your continued support. Have a terrific week.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Smith
Week of January 9th

Dear Room 5 Families,

I hope you are all had a good first week back and are settling into the new year. As many of you are aware, the Spell-A-Thon is coming up in a couple of weeks. Even though the children are not required to raise money for the school, they are required to practice the words and take a spelling test. We will be taking the official Spell-A-Thon test on Wednesday, January 25th. I don't want any of the children to feel intimidated by the words. Please practice the words each night. If you find the words are too easy and you would like them to do more, please have them work on Iready or Raz Kids.

Thank you for all of your support. Have a terrific week.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Smith

Week of January 3rd 2017

Dear Room Five Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a terrific winter break. I enjoyed my time with my family and two girls very much.

We are already right back into the swing of things at school. We started off our morning in the garden, and did a Martin Luther King Jr. project with our buddies. We also went to computer lab and started a new math lesson on equals.

This week our word wall words are all the color words. Our homework is as follows: Tuesday- Word wall sentences, Wednesday- Raz Kids, and Thursday- Iready Reading.

Thank you for volunteering your time and for your continuous support. Best wishes for a happy and health 2017.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Smith

Week of December 12th

It has been such a pleasure to meet with you during parent teacher conferences. Thank you for all you do to support your child this year and always. I know first hand, parenting is not an easy job :)

We have a very festive week planned. There will be no assigned homework, but Iready and Raz kids are available always in case you feel the need. On Wednesday, we will take out walk to City Hall. We will leave campus at about 10:00 a.m. and walk over to City Hall. If you are meeting us there, plan on getting there by 10:15 or so. For those chaperones that I emailed individually about district paperwork, etc., please contact Yvonne and or meet us there instead.

On Thursday, we will have our class party and each student will decorate their own gingerbread house. Thank you to all of you who have sent in supplies or have volunteered your time and energy :)

On Friday, the students can wear pajamas and we will have a popcorn and hot cocoa party! I am planning on reading them The Polar Express and showing a brief movie. We will also have library. Dismissal will be at 1:30.

This holiday season, please know how grateful I am to work at Sequoia and serve your student. We have a wonderful class this year and I am so proud of all of their growth. Please have a very fun, relaxing, and safe winter break.

Week 14 ( Week of November 28th)

Dear Room 5 Families,

I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving. I am still amazed at how quickly this month has flown by. Wasn't is just Halloween?! It was really nice to see all those little faces today. I missed them.:)

A HUGE thank you to our room mom Jessica Barnett. She has been working so hard in planning all of our class parties thus far. I'm sure she will be looking for volunteers to help with the gingerbread houses we will be making during our holiday party on December 15th. We will need volunteers to help assemble graham cracker houses with milk cartons ( a day or two before?), so that the children can decorate them on that day. We will also need lots of candies and frosting to turn them into ginger wonderlands!

This week homework will be as usual. Monday- Word Wall, Tuesday- Iready Reading, Wednesday- Raz Kids, and Thursday- Iready Math. The new login information was sent home a few weeks ago. It is the same for Iready Reading and Math.

I look forward to seeing all of you for conferences starting next week, December 5th! Also, please remember to sign the permission slip for our walking field trip on December 14th. Thank you again for all of your support!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Smith smiley

ssmithsequoia@groupspaces.com;
Hello Room 5,
Just a quick note about this week....
First off, they are changing the IReady username's back to what they were previously. It will be the first initial in the first name and first initial in the last name followed by their student I.D. I will send home passwords when I get them next week. In the mean time, if you know your child's I.D. you are good to go! I am not sure how long it will take the district to switch everyone over.
Also, next week we will have a take home turkey assignment that they will have the entire week to work on. It is due November 10th. There will be no other assigned homework next week.
Next Friday is Veteran's Day, so there is no school. Enjoy your three day weekend.
**If you have not signed up for your conference with me please do so or email me privately if you did not receive the sign up genius.
Have a great week!
